Combine Austin Energy Rebates with No Tax Holiday for Huge Savings
Do you need to replace your air conditioner? Are you buying a new refrigerator and need to get rid of the old one? Or do you need a clothes washer that uses less water and energy? By combining Austin Energy rebates with the savings from the Texas Energy Sales Tax Holiday this Memorial Day weekend, customers can save hundreds of dollars on the purchase of the new appliances as well as reduce their electricity bill with the more efficient appliances.
No sales taxes are being charged on select ENERGY STAR® appliances and products over the three-day weekend.
ENERGY STAR labeled air conditioners priced at $6,000 or less are eligible for the no-tax holiday. With an Austin local sales tax of 8.25% that won’t be charged, that’s a $495 savings on a $6,000 air conditioner. Combine it with a rebate of $350 for a 15 SEER/12.5 EER central air conditioner from Austin Energy, and that’s a total savings of $845.
New efficient air conditioners also use 20% to 40% less electricity than 10 SEER or older models. Because the air conditioner is the biggest energy user in the home especially during the hot summer months, an
ENERGY STAR air conditioner will help to reduce the amount of electricity used and save customers money.
Refrigerators priced at $2,000 or less also are eligible during the no-tax holiday – a potential Austin tax savings of up to $165. Combine that with a rebate of $50 from Austin Energy to recycle your old refrigerator, and that’s a savings of $215. Older refrigerators use two to three times more energy than a new, efficient model. When placed in a garage to cool food or drinks, the old refrigerator adds up $200 a year in electricity costs for the home.
Austin Energy offers a $50 rebate to recycle old, working refrigerators 14-to-27 cubic feet. As much as 98% of the material in the appliance will be reused and the ozone-depleting refrigerants in the appliance will be captured and disposed of properly.
Austin Water and Austin Energy also offer a combined rebate of $100 for eligible clothes washers that are part of the no-tax weekend. A participant must be a retail water customer of the City of Austin or receive water from a City-supplied water district to receive the $50 rebate from Austin Water. Customers with electric water heaters also can receive a $50 rebate from Austin Energy with the purchase of an eligible clothes washer. (Texas Gas Service offers a $25 rebate to customers with gas water heaters.)
ENERGY STAR clothes washers use 50% less water per load than a standard washer and only about $5 per month in electricity costs.
Austin Energy does not offer rebates on all of the ENERGY STAR products eligible during the no-tax weekend but recommends the purchase of ENERGY STAR products and appliances to save customers energy.
