Energy Efficient Glossary of Terms

Passive Design: Passive solar design refers to the use of the sun's energy for the heating and cooling of living spaces. In this approach, the building itself or some element of it takes advantage of natural energy characteristics in materials and air created by exposure to the sun.

Thermal or Building Envelope: Refers to the enclosure that holds warm or cool air inside a structure. The walls, windows, doors, floors and ceilings of a structure combine to define its thermal envelope.

Central Stair Tower: A design approach that serves as a light well and a convective chimney to draw natural ventilation through the house.

Solar Gain: refers to the increase in temperature in a space, object or structure that results from solar radiation.

Patioport: A flexible outdoor living space designed to be used as either a carport or a patio.

Craftsman Architecture: Popularized at the turn of the 20th century by architect and furniture designer Gustav Stickley in his magazine, The Craftsman, the Craftsman-style bungalow reflected, said Stickley, "a house reduced to it's simplest form... its low, broad proportions and absolute lack of ornamentation gives it a character so natural and unaffected that it seems to... blend with any landscape."

The style, which was also widely billed as the "California bungalow" by architects such as Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene, featured overhanging eaves, a low-slung gabled roof, and wide front porches framed by pedestal-like tapered columns. Material often included stone, rough-hewn wood, and stucco. Many homes have wide front porches across part of the front, supported by columns.
